You have probably been told your entirely life that the sun, as beautiful as it is, and as bright as that Vitamin D makes you feel, is ultimately harmful to your skin. Because of this ingrained knowledge, we take the appropriate precautions; but have you ever given thought to the damage the sun can do to your hair? If not, you’re far from alone. But have no fear — I will be rolling out some helpful tips for The Wonder Report readers to ensure your tresses remain healthy, shiny and mermaid-esque for the remainder of summer! We wouldn’t want you to have it any other way.
So, although most of your summer haircare regimen begins at the salon, home haircare is crucial; ahead are some ways to help you give your mane the care it deserves every day.
Tip #1 Try washing less frequently, or consider co-washing. “Co-Washing” or conditioner washing, is ideal for summer. Start by wetting your hair and then apply your conditioner instead of reaching for your shampoo. If you are feeling like your hair is extra dry, do not rinse your conditioner out. You can easily turn your favorite every day conditioner into your new favorite leave-in treatment. Leave it in, tie your hair back, and head to the pool or beach. Rinse thoroughly after a few hours (or even the next day), but do not shampoo out. Rinsing is enough.
Tip #2 Do you feel like sometimes your hair is flatter in the summer while other people are seemingly having the opposite problem? You’re not going crazy! Sometimes, the high humidity content in the atmosphere can settle on the hair and actually weigh it down. Try to use lighter-weight styling products on days like this.
Tip #3 Avoid excessive heat when styling your hair. Allow a few minutes for your hair to air dry before blow-drying so there is less time spent putting more heat on the hair. Your hair is already parched enough in the summer months without adding thermal styling into the mix, so it’s best to try to avoid it if possible. If you can live without heat, try to keep it to a minimum.
Tip #4 Products for color-treated hair truly do make a difference when it comes to maintaining the integrity of the hair, as well as the longevity of the color. After spending money and time at the salon, why would you want to throw it all away by being in the sun without the appropriate protection?
Tip #5 Choose styling products that contain SPF. Although the sun cannot technically burn your hair in the same sense that it can burn your skin, exposure definitely damages your hair’s natural protective film. As a result, hair can become dull, dry, brittle and fragile.
Tip #6 Beware of chlorine and salty water. There are few things more refreshing than taking a dip in the pool or the ocean on a hot summer day, but both chlorine and salt water can wreak havoc on hair. Chlorine binds to the hair and can result in a greenish hue (especially in blondes). Additionally, mineral deposits from the salty ocean can severely dehydrate hair. Before swimming in either place, wet your hair and apply leave-in conditioner. It creates a much-needed barrier between the hair and the chlorine, while simultaneously hydrating the hair should you opt for the ocean instead.
Tip #7 At your next salon visit, inquire about an Olaplex treatment. This hair-saving miracle treatment is a fave of almost all celebrity stylists, and keeps the majority of hair types in silky, shiny and in optimum condition.
Summer is the perfect time to flaunt your effortless beach waves, your highlighted-to-perfection mane, and your silky, smooth topknot, but always remember that your hair is the crown you never take off, so keep it protected from the wrath of the scorching sun. Pamper those tresses and enjoy the sun!
